We are working towards our ‘Gold Arts mark’ here at Moorland. To raise the profile of the arts (literary, visual and performing) we decided to have an ‘Arts week’. This was an opportunity for all the children to experience various creative experiences such as poetry, creative writing, singing, playing instruments, performing, drawing, painting, sculpting, collaging, sewing and dancing. The theme for the week was ‘Vive la difference’ which celebrated different countries and their cultures and our capacity to embrace this wonderful diversity.
The effort from the children and staff was phenomenal. There was a wealth of creativity…a real ‘buzz’ around the school. It was delightful to see children so engaged in their learning. Each year group based their weeks work on a different country.
Nursery and Reception – Finland
Year 1 – Spain
Year 2 – Australia
Year 3/4 – Somalia
Year 5 – India
Year 6 – Wales.
We were also really lucky to have the talent of Nathan Sheen (Artist in Residence) to work with Key Stage 2. The banners and flags created under his supervision were amazingly detailed and striking. All classes had the opportunity to participate in a Samba workshop with Adrian. The children thoroughly enjoyed this unbelievably rhythmic percussion.
The ‘Performing Arts Assembly’ on Friday 11th November was an opportunity for the children to show one aspect of their week to the whole school. It was very memorable and there was certainly ‘Moorland Magic’ captured in the hall. Reception performed a beautiful ‘Snow flake dance’, Year 1 did an outstanding dance called ‘El Baile de los Manos’, Year 2 started with didgeridoos and then sang ‘Walking in the Bush’ , Year 3/4 performed an acrostic poem and ‘Drought Breaker’, Year 5 were breath taking in their ‘Jai Ho’ dance and finally Year 6 performed a welsh folk dance.
The absolute highlight of the week was the parade around Splott. Despite the fact it started raining exactly the moment we started, the now legendary Adrian (Samba man) led the whole school to the hypnotic samba beat. The children specially selected to perform in the band were stoic in their concentration and rhythm – they deserve special praise. All the children had huge smiles on their faces (despite the inclement weather) and waved their flags and banners with great gusto! There was a massive turn out from parents and many Splott residents looked out of their windows to see what the huge rumpus was! It was a very memorable event that I’m sure will be remembered dearly by the children who took part.
A HUGE thank you to all the children and staff for the magnificent effort all week! You are all amazing sports. Well done everyone!!
